History of the Beagle
The Beagle's origins date back to Ancient Greece, though the breed we recognize today was refined in Great Britain during the 1800s. Originally used for "beagling"—hunting rabbits on foot—they became popular because they were small enough to follow without a horse.
Their name is thought to come from the French word "begueule" (open throat), referring to their unique baying voice. Throughout history, they have been favorites of royalty, including Queen Elizabeth I, who famously kept "Pocket Beagles."
Today, the Beagle remains a top choice for families due to their low maintenance, medium size, and affectionate personality.
Temperament
Beagles are known as the "Goldilocks" of dog temperaments—they are rarely aggressive and rarely timid. They are social pack animals that thrive on company.
Beagles are vocal dogs; their "baying" is a hallmark of the breed, used to communicate when they've found something exciting!
